Underprotection is a Danish lingerie brand that also produces swimwear and loungewear. Since its founding in 2010, the company has made it its mission to make sustainable lingerie at least just as attractive a product as its conventional industry counterparts. Ten years later, we pride the company on becoming a great sustainable brand that has done just that.
Underprotection takes great care in sourcing only more sustainable materials. These include materials like banana fibre, organic cotton or recycled polyester. All materials it uses are certified by a third-party organization and most of them are Oeko-Tex certified, which means there are no harmful chemicals used in the production process. This is healthier for you and the planet. While most of Underprotection’s products are vegan, some can contain recycled wool or milk fiber, an interesting fiber that is made from sour milk from the dairy industry.
Production takes place in a small factory in India, which is called Eco Wear and exclusively produces for Underprotection. The factory upholds a Code of Conduct with labor standards that are derived from ILO conventions and has been awarded the Fair Wear Foundation Young Designer license in the past. The company states that it has some new suppliers based in Europe and we’re eager to hear who these are and what Underprotection is actively doing to improve the labor conditions, this information is currently missing. But since Europe is a low-risk country in terms of labor conditions, things should be fine. Another action point should be more disclosure on percentages of the materials it uses for its products. This can be the stepping stone towards calculating the carbon footprint of the company. Currently, there’s no environmental data provided on things like material emissions, transport emissions, renewable energy usage or water consumption. Underprotection states that it wants to improve in everything it does and that change is constant, and we don’t doubt that.
