Iron Roots is a Dutch athletic and sportswear brand. The brand was founded in 2017 and has been true to its mission ever since. Their iterations have led them to a product range that includes t-shirts, hoodies, joggers, and shorts that are all made from 100% natural materials.
It is very hard to find sportswear that is not made from cheap, petroleum-based materials like polyester. The fashion – and especially sportswear industry has a huge reliance on synthetic fibers which is disastrous for the climate in various ways. Besides supporting the oil industry and the heavy processing of the fibers to turn them into garments, these synthetic garments also create a huge waste stream that does not break down into the environment. Microplastics are a huge problem that is unfortunately only getting bigger.
Iron Roots does not agree with polluting for profit and has made it its mission to change the sportswear industry for the better. The team is continuously experimenting with natural materials to produce sportswear that is made from 100% natural fibers. Materials that the company likes are Lyocell and Modal which are made from eucalyptus. These are antistatic, lightweight, and moisture-wicking, which are some of the qualities that we love in sportswear. Other materials the brand utilizes are hemp and organic cotton. If it’s fit for sportswear, not made from plastics, and has a low environmental footprint it’s a match for Iron Roots!
It’s not just materials that they do better than most of their industry counterparts. Iron Roots’ factories are mostly located in Portugal and Greece and are certified by GOTS. It’s possible to send used garments back to the company for them to recycle and packaging is handled without plastics of course!
There’s improvement possible as well. With new product lines, more challenges arise, and Iron Roots can step up its game by utilizing innovations and increasing transparency in other aspects of its business. But for now, we fully endorse this brand and support its mission.
